CTO Club – The pinnacle of angioplasty
Doctors practising interventional cardiology not only need to have top medical knowledge in treating patients medically, they would need a special skill set in manoeuvring delicate guide-wires and micro-catheters into the intricate labyrinth of a patient's coronary arteries. Therefore, the practice of such procedures not only became an important life-saving skill, it has developed into a form of medical art amongst the world's best operators. CTO - which means Chronic Total Occlusion, is the toughest form of arterial blockage an interventional cardiologist would encounter. The Japanese are one of the best in this art and have developed many world-acclaimed techniques and procedures to successfully open up stubborn arterial blockages. The Japanese interventional cardiologists are immensely respected in the global cardiology fraternity.
The CTO Club
It has long been highly regarded as the final frontier of Interventional cardiology due to its technical difficulty in angioplasty. Some would say that it is akin to the Ferrari or Lamborghini Club of in motor-sport - Only the best doctors with the top skills present their cases. This competition has always been traditionally won by top Japanese interventional cardiologists. Annually, many top Interventional cardiologists from around the world submit their tough and unique cases to the CTO Club panel - Only the top 4 cases will get an honourable mention and worthy to compete in an Oral Presentation. Therefore, by winning the 15th edition of this competition, Dr Tan had brought immense pride and honour to Singapore and the local medical community.
